BANGOR (AP) – A soldier visiting a friend in Maine was shot from behind four times, according to an affidavit released Monday as two Madison men were formally charged with murder.
Chad Slimm, 20, and Arthur “Artie” Belanger Jr., 21, were returned to Piscataquis County Jail in Dover-Foxcroft during their initial appearance in District Court in Bangor. Neither entered a plea and a bail hearing was scheduled for next Monday.
Their arrests Saturday came two days after investigators found the body of 23-year-old Brian Vines at a hunting camp in Parkman. Investigators believe Vines was killed on Oct. 6.
Vines was an active duty soldier at Fort Campbell, Ky., who came to Maine to visit Belanger, a former Army buddy, authorities said.
An official at Fort Campbell said a soldier there with the same name as the victim is a member 101st Airborne Division Air Assault. He said the Army had not received details of what happened in Maine.
An affidavit filed with the court by state police said Vines had been shot four times – twice in the head, once in the neck and once in the arm – all from behind.
The affidavit said that in an interview Saturday, Belanger confessed to shooting Vines at the camp in Parkman and Slimm admitted he helped Belanger kill Vines. Slimm was visibly distraught in court on Monday.
