DIXMONT (AP) – A 4-year-old boy was killed when he was struck by a car while crossing Route 7 with his mother and brother, police said.

Abram Lucas Mauger of Dixmont was pronounced dead at the scene Saturday evening; his mother and a brother in a stroller were not hit, according to the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department.

Passersby worked frantically to try to save the boy. A LifeFlight helicopter initially was called but was canceled.

Sarah Stanton, 19, of Newport, the driver of the car, and her passenger were taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor because they were extremely distraught after the accident.

A state police accident reconstructionist was called in to assist as authorities continued their investigation.
