A group of people in Bangor united in a human chain Saturday as others elsewhere in Maine gathered for somber memorials remembering the anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and those who were killed three years ago.
In Bangor, the “Chain of Concern in Remembrance of 9/11 and Its Aftermath” was planned along Route 2 between Eastern Maine Medical Center and Mt. Hope Cemetery.
In Augusta, Gov. John Baldacci and state law enforcement officers gathered for a moment of silent observance at the Blaine House. Baldacci, who was a U.S. representative then, said he will never forget the nation after the attacks.
“It was a time when you could feel the country coming together,” Baldacci said. “It was a time when parties didn’t matter. Regions didn’t matter. Nothing mattered but the safety of this country.”
The day was not completely filled with sad occasions, however.
Echoing comments made by President Bush and others immediately after the attacks, Jason Nadeau said life must go on. The 20-year-old married Carolyn Robinson during an outdoor wedding in Bingham.
“We figured we’d make something good out of it,” Nadeau said.
