WILTON – Most people in Wilton seem satisfied with the town and want to keep it that way, Sy Balch, chairman of the Comprehensive Plan Committee, said during a public hearing Thursday.

After more than two years of outreach and research, the committee’s vision for the town over the next 20 years includes doing more to attract tourists and business downtown and on Route 2 while preserving its rural character. The town has four villages: Wilton, Dryden, East Dixfield and East Wilton.

Better infrastructure and modern high-speed communication systems for both telephone and Internet service are critical, Balch said.

The town has unique characteristics that are also important and define the town including Wilson Lake, Kineowatha Park, the golf course and being close to Farmington, the hospital and university. The committee envisions taking more advantage of the town’s closeness to major ski areas, Mt. Blue State Park in Weld and a network of snowmobile trails that run through town and connect to the state ITS system.

The plan is ready to go to print and copies will be available before the town votes on the plan at the annual June town meeting, Code Enforcement Officer Paul Montague said.

He reminded people that the comprehensive plan plays an advisory or guidance role for town committees and boards to refer to while making decisions. The plan is necessary for the town to have zoning ordinances, he said.
