FARMINGTON – The town’s Budget Committee is recommending a $4.3 million spending plan, just $2,000 less than what selectmen proposed for 2009-10.

Voters will decide March 9 between the $4,350,109 proposed by the committee and the $4,352,109 urged by selectmen.

At its final session Wednesday, the committee voted 7-1 to recommend putting $2,000 into the public works reserve account, instead of the $5,000 requested. The account now totals $35,418. Committee member Ryan Morgan said lowering the contribution was consistent with what other departments had done.

The committee voted 6-2 to recommend the American Red Cross get $3,500 as requested, because of the economy and the agency’s work.

Selectmen recommended giving the agency $2,500.

Most of the committee agreed with selectmen to reject money for the Abused Women’s Advocacy Project, which asked for $5,000.

Selectmen on Tuesday voted not to approve any wage increases for positions considered too low in a recent compensation study, Town Manager Richard Davis said.

Some departments made reductions to vehicle fuel budgets.
