WILTON – The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month was set aside to pay respect to veterans and those now serving, said Pastor Douglas Dunlap as he gave a brief history of Veterans Day Tuesday. The timing was in remembrance of Armistice Day, which ended the Great War, World War I, he said.

Community members gathered around the monument on Main Street on Tuesday for what some people said ought to be an annual service in Wilton.

“It’s been some time since we’ve observed Veterans Day here but hopefully, it will start a tradition,” Dunlap said.

Pastors from the Wilton Ecumenical Ministry and members of Wilton’s American Legion Post 117 participated in the service.

Urban West, a Navy veteran who served in the Philippines in the mid 1940s and a member of Post 117, placed a memorial wreath at the monument.

Lt. Col. Michael Backus of Wilton thanked the people there for their support and appreciation of veterans.
