JAY – Oh yeah, they had fun.

That was the consensus of a group of Jay Elementary School students as they climbed down from two firetrucks Monday morning.

Parents and grandparents, cameras in hand, awaited the arrival of the vehicles outside the school.

A thick fog made visibility difficult as they watched for Jay Fire Rescue Department’s Engine No. 3 and Ladder 1 to pull up the driveway carrying the children.

The children’s names were entered in a drawing after visiting the fire station for the open house the department held during Fire Prevention Week.

The boys were excited when they found out their names were chosen, and were even more excited when the trucks arrived at their homes for the ride to school, parents said.

David Howes, the father of twins, Jason and Logan, third-graders on a truck, said his oldest son, Bradley, a student at the middle school, was also chosen for a ride on a firetruck Tuesday.

Older children had to submit an essay as part of the safety program.

Families didn’t have to wait too long as the headlights on the firetrucks suddenly appeared.

Other students and school staff watched from inside the school as fire Capt. James Butler and fire department Assistant Chief Tim Toothaker opened doors to let the boys out.

Photos were snapped in front of Engine No. 3 before they went to their classrooms.

Asked if it was fun, kindergartner Colby Smith said “Oh yeah.”
