FARMINGTON – SAD 9 directors will conduct a first reading Tuesday of proposed changes to the district’s extra-curricular activity participation regulation.
Directors had sent the initial policy back to the Policy Committee for review after concerns were raised at a board meeting in September pertaining to students, juvenile and adult crime in conjunction with extra-curricular activities.
Mt. Blue High School Principal Monique Poulin shared concerns about the policy requiring a thorough investigation with access to information on juvenile crimes being difficult to get. She raised concerns about the consequences for a wide variety of crimes and asked that a few parameters be set, according to SAD 9 minutes.
The section of policy prohibits SAD 9 students from enrolling or continuing to participate in one of the district’s extracurricular activity programs if the student is found by administrators to have participated in criminal conduct.
“This is an attempt to provide greater clarity and some guidance for the administration, if there are violations of the policy,” Superintendent Michael Cormier said of the proposed changes.
The board will have two readings on the policy and after the second reading consider its adoption, Cormier said.
SAD 9 directors meet at 7 p.m. Oct. 14, at the Mt. Blue Middle School.
The Policy Committee has recommended that wording requiring students and their parents to cooperate with the administration in obtaining juvenile criminal records.
If the information isn’t provided, the students will be refused participation in extra-curricular activities for up to a year, proposed policy language states.
