LIVERMORE FALLS – Selectmen plan to ask voters again if they want to change the treasurer position from being elected to being appointed.
This time the board will provide more information to adequately educate people about why the change should be made, select board Chairwoman Louise Chabot said. A vote could be taken at the June town meeting.
There was not enough information provided to voters to make a decision when they rejected it in June 2007, she said.
Residents voted 145-117 against the change that year.
Auditors recommend the treasurer be appointed, Chabot said, and it would ensure continuity in the process.
The treasurer would report to the select board in order to ensure “checks and balances,” Chabot said.
Chabot commended Town Clerk/Treasurer Kristal Flagg for her foresight to meet with bank officials to ensure the town’s funds were adequately protected during the worldwide economic downturn.
It might not have happened if there was an inexperienced treasurer, she said.
Flagg said if the position was appointed there would need to be a contract agreement as is done with a town manager.
She agreed there were some rumors floating around the last time the proposed change was on the ballot and people may not have had all the information they needed.
Flagg said the town’s money will be protected under the Certificate of Deposit Account Registry Service, which gives access to multimillion dollar federal insurance protection on certificates of deposit. She plans to stagger accounts to make sure money is available every two weeks.
