WILTON – The fire engine blasted a goodbye to Cushing School kindergarten and pre-school students Monday as they started back to school after visiting the fire station in observance of Fire Prevention Week.
Students watched as firefighters enacted the scene of being called for a fire including dressing in their gear, rolling out a truck and spraying water, fire Chief Sonny Dunham said.
Dunham, with help from Sparky the firedog and seven firefighters, has spoken with more than 50 children about fire safety, stop, drop and roll, and the 911 system. Another class was expected early Monday afternoon, he said.
Some younger students last year were not sure where they lived when discussing the 911 system so teachers borrowed materials over the winter to work with them, he said.
“Sparky the fire dog has a nose for fires,” Dunham told the children after they had watched the mascot ride in the department’s snorkel. The children were then invited to look over the trucks.
Students from Academy Hill, the Head Start program and another day care are also expected to take part in Fire Prevention Week activities, Dunham added.
