NEW VINEYARD – Townspeople voted 48-17 not to borrow $222,000 over 10 years to rebuild a portion of Barker Road, Board of Selectmen Chairwoman Fay Adams said.

With interest of $61,050, the total cost was estimated at $283,050.

Voters made the decision by written ballot Saturday during a special town meeting. They did approve transferring up to $9,500 from surplus to put a new metal roof on the town office/library building by a show of hands, Town Clerk Arlene Davis said.

Voters had previously authorized selectmen in March to take out a bond from the Maine bond bank to pay for a portion of the road work on the warrant, but a technicality arose after no financial statement was included in the warrant.

It was revoted Saturday.

“Everyone has been watching the world news. Borrow money, are you kidding? We don’t even know if we could even get it,” Adams said. “I just think the timing is wrong.”

The payment for the first year was estimated at $32,000, she said.

There is nothing to prevent the road repairs from coming up again, she added.

Voters also had approved using Maine Department of Transportation funds, $50,000 in surplus and some reserve money in March to make other road repairs.

That work of shimming, refurbishing and putting new hot top on another section of Barker Road has been done, Adams said.
