JAY – Selectmen will hold a special town meeting Oct. 6 for voters to consider transferring $5,000 from the town’s layover funds to an emergency heating fund to benefit Jay people.

The town meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. that Monday at the town office.

Dr. Ellen Grunblatt of Jay wrote a letter to the board earlier this month in her capacity as vice president of Western Maine Community Action asking the town to consider the donation.

Grunblatt and Irv Faunce, a representative of the agency, recently gave selectmen an update on the heating fund constraints with more people applying for assistance and the increased cost of heating oil.

The money would be administered by the agency through the Franklin Area Ecumenical Heating Fund, Grunblatt stated.

“The financial need is great,” Grunblatt wrote.

Last year, residents of Jay received more than $170,000 in federal and state heating assistance.
