LIVERMORE FALLS – One Livermore Falls selectman said that if the town intended to enforce an existing parking and traffic ordinance, it would need one police officer just to do that.

The ordinance was adopted in 1980 and since then 14 amendments have been made.

Those amendments for the most part, consisted of entries into the selectmen’s meeting minutes.

The original and the amendments were combined into one document that selectmen reviewed during a hearing Sept. 15.

It outlined parking on certain sides of different streets, one-hour parking in areas downtown, fines and other related specifics.

One item it didn’t address was handicap parking.

Selectmen agreed signs need to be bought and installed to indicate where parking is prohibited and to alert parkers to the one-hour limit. The latter designation includes Main and Depot streets downtown.

“You cannot expect people from out of town to know our parking ordinance,” Selectman Bill Demeray said.

The areas where parking is limited to an hour will be a surprise to some.

“It’s going to be a shock to people because they have been parking there for years,” he said.

Selectmen Ernie Souther suggested a committee be formed to review the ordinance and bring it up to date with current conditions.
