LIVERMORE FALLS – Two crosswalks on Water and Depot streets have been removed at the state’s instruction.

The crosswalk formerly in front of the Androscoggin Bank near the railroad crossing was moved to near Sturtevant & Ham Insurance and the Chuck Wagon parking lot.

The Maine Department of Transportation didn’t want the crosswalk near the tracks repainted because of potential danger, highway foreman Bill Nichols told selectmen Monday.

Both ends of that crosswalk now are near a break in the sidewalks that provides better handicap accessibility, he said.

Crosswalks are supposed to 500 feet apart, he said.

A second crosswalk that was on the opposite side of Water Street near a hot dog stand was removed because of the closeness to the newly created crosswalk, Nichols said.

The crosswalk on Depot Street was removed and the Main Street one was angled to go across from the Chuck Wagon door to the other side of the street in front of the town office.

The latter provides better visibility for pedestrians as they attempt to cross at the busy corner.
