FARMINGTON – New playground equipment at Hippach Field was assembled Saturday by about 35 volunteers, said Amy Graham, leader of the group Parents for the Playground on Monday.
Kevin Vining’s workers were there Monday morning to pour cement around the posts and set 6- by 6-foot beams around the equipment, which will contain 12-inches of soft sand to act as a buffer under the equipment if a child falls.
A paving crew from Wilton is expected to put in a walkway this week. The paved path from the handicapped parking space in front of the tennis court to a handicapped accessible ramp on the equipment will allow wheelchairs to roll up to the structure, said Steve Shible, director of Farmington’s parks and recreation department.
A grand opening is expected in June, but children may be able to try out the new equipment by this weekend, Graham said.
“It was quite a community effort on Saturday,” Shible said. “The parents should be commended for getting out volunteers who worked for six or more hours and brought tools.”
Parents for the Playground includes approximately 10 families who met through the preschool playgroup at the University of Maine at Farmington. They raised more than $40,000 to replace the Hippach Field equipment.
The project also includes adding four swings and removing an older wooden structure.
Farmington Conservation Commission secured a grant to provide landscaping for the area within the next few weeks, Graham said. Benches and plaques are also being added in preparation for the grand opening, she added.
