JAY – A Jay man is facing numerous charges after police responded to a report of an assault in progress late Sunday night. Gary Choate, 20, is accused of hitting another person with a chair and assaulting a female and a police officer before he was subdued. He was released on $250 cash bail Wednesday.

Choate was arrested early Monday on charges of two counts of domestic assault and failure to submit to arrest. He was also summonsed on charges of operating an unregistered vehicle, operating a motor vehicle without a license, simple assault, criminal mischief and a civil charge of being a minor in possession of alcohol by consumption, police Chief Larry White Sr. said.

Choate is scheduled to appear Feb. 21 at a Farmington court.

Sgt. Troy Young arrived at 15 Jewell St. on Sunday night to discover Choate had assaulted a female at the residence, White said.

Choate became confrontational with Young and demanded that the officer leave the residence, and then he assaulted Young and attempted to eject him from the home, White said.

Young placed Choate under arrest as the physical confrontation continued. Young and Choate fell to the floor, slipping in beer and broken glass that was on the floor from the fighting prior to Young’s arrival, White said.

Officer Russell Adams and Livermore Falls officer Brock Caton arrived to assist Young in taking Choate into custody.

Caton ended up placing a Taser gun without its probe cartridge on Chaote’s arm to dry-stun him. He was arrested immediately afterward, White said.

After Choate was taken into custody, other witnesses at the home told officers that the incident started when Choate took an unregistered car belonging to another resident, White said.

Police are investigating whether the vehicle was involved in an accident in town earlier that evening, he said.

When other people at the residence attempted to tell Choate he had no right to do what he did with the car, White said, he became violent and hit a man with a chair and assaulted others at the home.

Choate was treated at a Farmington hospital for a cut to his hand, White said.

“Liquor appeared to be a factor in the incident,” White said.
