JAY – The town has received 10 bids for the renovation of the former Jay Family Restaurant into a new town office and police station. The bids range from a base of $598,800, not factoring in some aspects of the work, to $768,033.

All bids are more than the $440,000 the town has set aside to spend on the renovations, Town Manager Ruth Marden said.

Members of the Jay Building Committee plan to review bids at 6 p.m. today at the Community Building before they make a recommendation to selectmen at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 6, at the Jay-Niles Memorial Library.

Voters authorized selectmen by a 92-to-72 vote on Jan. 29 to buy the vacant building for $270,000 and to spend the remainder of the $729,000 reserve account, after deducting the purchase prices and other legal and survey expenses, to renovate the building for a new town office/police station.

Bunker & Savage Architects of Augusta are handling the architectural services with the cost not to exceed $35,000.

The bids for the renovation work were opened Thursday, Town Manager Ruth Marden said Friday.

Zachau Construction of Freeport was the base low bidder but there were alternative bids for siding a generator and sound system that needed to be factored in, Marden said.

The high bid was from CMC & Maintenance Inc. of Bangor.
