LIVERMORE FALLS – SAD 36 directors are expected to consider reinstituting a drug abuse resistance program at the Livermore Elementary School at their meeting Thursday, Sept. 13.

The board heard a presentation on Aug. 23 from Livermore Falls reserve police officer Eric Bernier of Livermore Falls, who is a full-time Dixfield police officer.

The DARE program has not been in the school system for several years. Livermore Falls Police Department has received a grant for the program this year and donations from the community.

The program is a partnership between parents, schools and police, Bernier told directors. During the course, Bernier said fifth-graders would learn a number of lessons including decision-making skills, influence of the media and how to resist peer pressure with supplemental lessons on bullying, role models, gangs, prescription drugs and Internet safety.

Students in the Dixfield school system get a grade for the program based on a number of criteria including completion of work and attendance,

Bernier said.

Director Denise Rodzen said two of her children went through the program.

She has noticed, Rodzen said, without DARE in the school, she is seeing more drug use among youth.

Principal Jeannine Backus said she had spoken to Bernier previously and believes the program could be worked into students’ schedules.

The meeting begins at 7 p.m. at the Cedar Street Learning Complex.
