LIVERMORE FALLS – Niles Azevedo, 36, escaped injury when a neighbor woke him after flames were seen on the outside of his mobile home early Tuesday. State fire investigators have determined the fire to be intentionally set.

Firefighters responded at 4:20 a.m. to the possible structure fire call at 12 Sandy Lane in the Pine Ridge Trailer Park off Route 106, fire Chief Ken Jones said.

A neighbor had knocked down the fire on the outside of the trailer with an extinguisher and the trailer occupant was using a garden hose to drench other hot spots, Jones said.

Firefighters checked out everything to make sure the fire was fully extinguished and called in fire investigators from the Office of the Maine State Fire Marshal to determine the cause of the fire, Jones said.

The trailer has a three-foot-wide burned section up the front of it, Jones said.

Fire Marshal’s Sgt. Ken Grimes said he and several state investigators had conducted a review of the scene and determined the fire to have been intentionally set, but were still working on the case. They planned to conduct more interviews Tuesday afternoon, Grimes said.

Franklin County Sheriff’s Cpl. Nate Bean with his tracking dog, Ben, worked the scene to see if the canine could pick up a track, Grimes said.

He tracked out to the street where he lost the scent, he said. Sometimes when a dog loses a track it means the person got into some type of transportation, he added.

Azevedo is believed to be living in the trailer under a rent-to-own agreement, Grimes said.
