FARMINGTON – Three dogs were struck by a snowmobiler early Monday night on the Rail Trail, ITS 87, in West Farmington. Two of the dogs suffered slight injuries but one dog ran from the scene, and the owners don’t know his condition.
Peter and Dianne Atkins of Belgrade were hiking the trail with seven dogs when a snowmobiler came around a curve on the trail at a high rate of speed, they said, and could not stop his snowmobile.
The couple said they tried to pull the dogs out of the way, but although the rider braked and swerved, the machine grazed two of the dogs then ran over their Bernese Mountain dog named Mikey.
The rider sped off from the scene.
The owners are asking for help to find Mikey. He weighs about 90 pounds, is large and hairy, mostly black and white with some tan.
He’s similar in size to a golden retriever with a white chest and a blaze of white going up from the nose to the forehead. He also has a large chunk of white hair on top of the head or back of the neck, they said.
The dog was last seen Tuesday morning near MG’s Video in West Farmington. An elderly woman living in a trailer near there said the dog was lying around and didn’t appear to have any external injuries. She gave the dog something to eat, she said.
The Farmington Police Department verified that officer Mary Pratt assisted the Maine Warden Service with a dog accident, but Pratt was unavailable for comment on Wednesday.
Animal Control Officer Wayne Atwood is helping the Atkins with their search. If anyone sees the dog, the couple asks that they either phone Farmington police at 778-6311, Atwood at 645-4918, or the Atkins’ cell phone at 781-249-0511.
