WILTON – Police charged a Wilton man with aggravated criminal mischief in connection with the burning of an ice fishing shack on Wilson Pond over the weekend.
Police Chief Dennis Brown said he issued Michael Cook, 23, a summons on the charge Tuesday morning.
The charge was determined after a conference call with Franklin County assistant district attorneys, he said.
The ice shack was destroyed in the fire about 1 a.m. Saturday. Brown estimated the damage was about $2,000.
Mark Latti, a spokesman for the Maine Warden Service, said the crime of burning down an ice shack was unusual although wardens often hear of people burning their own shacks at the end of the fishing season rather than remove them from the ice. Latti also said that ice shack vandalism is fairly common in Maine.
