JAY – A homeowner extinguished a good portion of a blaze that started as a chimney fire and extended into the walls by the time firefighters arrived, Fire Rescue Chief Scott Shink said Monday.

Shink, who was at a selectmen’s meeting at the time of fire call, was the first to arrive at George St. Pierre’s home at 228 Warren Hill Road in East Jay, and the fire was almost out, he said.

It was toned out to firefighters as a structure fire, he said, and firefighters from Jay, Wilton and Livermore Falls responded.

Firefighters did some checking to make sure the fire hadn’t extended into the structure, he said.

No one was injured and there was minor damage to the home, he said.
