It’s nearly time for the annual Spirit of the Season Christmas Tree Lighting and Parade to begin.
There will be caroling, floats, pictures with Santa and a tree lighting beginning at 5:15 p.m. Saturday in Jay and Livermore Falls.
Lineup for the parade begins at 4:30 at MEMCO on Main Street in Jay. The parade kicks off at 5:15 with at least six floats, firetrucks, police and emergency vehicles traveling from Jay to Livermore Falls, where it stops at Union Park.
From 5:50 to 6 members of Cub Scout Pack 599 will sing Christmas carols at the Christmas tree at the park, followed by awards and certificate presentations for floats.
The tree lighting is scheduled for 6:15 to 6:30 with Barbara Cook, Jay-Livermore-Livermore Falls Rotary Club Spirit of the Season Committee chairwoman, giving a brief history behind the tree and the bulbs people donate in memory of a loved one.
Then it’s time for a visit with Santa and pictures for children at Androscoggin Bank from 6:30 to 8:30 Entry to the bank is at the rear of the building, Cook said.
Refreshments are being donated by area veterans’ auxiliaries and Rotary Club members.
There was a good turnout last year, Cook said.
“The kids love it. They had a great time,” she said.
Proceeds from the bulb sales in memory of a special person or in honor of someone go toward buying coats and warm clothing for children in need at schools in Jay, Livermore and Livermore Falls.
Last year the Rotary Club bought more than 80 new coats for children, Cook said.
The North Jay Grange women knit hats, mittens and scarves that they put together with matching coats for the children, she said.
Donations for bulbs are $5 and a donation box for the Santa photos will also be available at the bank.
If there is a serious storm, the event will be postponed until Sunday, Dec. 3, Cook said, but a little sprinkle of snow will only enhance the holiday spirit, she said.
Cook also asks parents, since it is often chilly on the day of the event, to dress children in warm clothing and hats and mittens.
