CARRABASSETT VALLEY – Heidi Sherburne said she is enjoying meeting residents as part of her new job as town clerk and tax collector.

Sherburne started her job a little over a month ago, and said she has enjoyed the friendliness of the residents. She is fairly new to the area and so is eager to meet people and get to know them, she said.

“Everyone has been very welcoming,” Sherburne says. “It’s been really great.”

She joins Nancy Ricker, who became town treasurer last July.

“I know a lot of the people, especially the seasonal residents, and they are all wonderful to work with,” she said.

Ricker has been a Sugarloafer since 1985, when she, her husband and three children first hit the mountain. She has one child attending the University of Maine at Farmington and one at Carrabassett Valley Academy. She said she loves the town, and the pace at the office is great, whether it’s super-busy or quiet.

“It’s all good,” Ricker says. “I really love this job and the people interaction every day.”

While both women enjoy the daily interaction with the local public, they have other interests, as well.

This time of year, Ricker can often be found on the golf course or hiking through the local woods. In the winter months, she is an avid volunteer on the mountain, Sugarloaf/USA, at the competition center, or enjoying the thrill of a few runs down the hill.

Sherburne likes to hit the hiking trails and the Narrow Gauge Pathway is one of her favorites, she says. In the winter, she hits the hill for skiing whenever she can.

“It’s a wonderful place here,” Sherburne says. “We have the best of both worlds, winter and summer. I love it here.”
