MOUNT VERNON – The item on the town meeting warrant expected to draw the most attention Saturday is the purchase of a new firetruck.

Voters will be asked to raise $3,000 for legal fees and paperwork in preparation for buying a $200,000 truck. Voters would consider the means to pay for it in a June referendum, selectmen’s Chairman Bruce Inch said Monday.

If the vote on the $3,000 fails, there will be no vote on it in June, he said.

Both selectmen and Budget Committee members are recommending a “no” vote on a truck this year, he said.

The proposed municipal budget is $865,661, an increase of $17,020.

That doesn’t include the town’s share of the school budget, which will be voted on in June, or the $181,142 for Kennebec County tax, an increase of $12,588 from last year, Inch said.

Besides the firetruck, Inch said it’s pretty much business as usual as far as the budget goes.

The town meeting begins at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Mount Vernon Elementary School.

Before the meeting starts, voters will have a chance to cast ballots for town and school officials. Voting for candidates will be between 8 a.m. and noon at the Community Center.

Three people are vying for the road commissioner’s position, a one-year term, Town Clerk Rachel Meader said Monday.

Candidates are incumbent Jeffrey Kent and challengers Lee Dunn and Brett Roberts.

Running uncontested for school board seats are Jay Stockford, seeking a two-year seat, and Malcolm Hardy, a three-year position. There also is one three-year term on the school board for which no one has taken out papers, Meader said.

Also running uncontested are Meader for tax collector and town clerk, both one-year positions. Treasurer Martha Gross has no challengers for another one-year term.

Newcomer Debra Baeder also is unchallenged for a three-year term on the Board of Selectmen, Meader said.
