FARMINGTON – Franklin County residents can now take advantage of a prescription drug discount program that is expected to help save them money on their medications.

County commissioners launched the program Tuesday through a program sponsored by the National Association of Counties to help residents cope with the high cost of prescription drugs.

The program offers average savings of 20 percent off the retail price of commonly prescribed drugs, according to the county.

The free prescription drug discount cards can be used by all county residents, regardless of age, income or existing health coverage or no health coverage. The cards will be accepted at Hannaford Food and Drug in Farmington and Jay, Howard’s Rexall Drug in Farmington, Riddle’s Pharmacy in Rangeley, Rite Aid Pharmacy in Farmington and Wal-Mart Pharmacy in Farmington.

A national network of more than 57,000 participating retail pharmacies also will honor the program’s prescription discount card.

Residents do not have to be Medicare beneficiaries to be eligible for this program.

Caremark, which is the program provider, was chosen for its price savings and its ease of use and understanding, according to information provided by Franklin County Clerk Julie Magoon on Tuesday.

There is no cost to the counties participating in the program and no cost to the citizens using the discount card, Magoon said.

The card will be given to residents with a brochure and can be used immediately by anyone who needs it.

The prescription cards are available at town offices in Carrabassett Valley, Eustis, Farmington, Jay, Kingfield, Phillips, Rangeley and Wilton.

County residents can call toll-free (877) 321-2652 or visit https://naco.advancerx.com for assistance with the program.
