FAYETTE – Selectmen have voted to approve several consent agreements for property owners and future property owners in violation of state junkyard regulations.

Fines are accruing at $100 a day for the violations. On Dec. 5, most of the affected property owners went to the board meeting. At that time, they already had $500 in accrued fines, which has been increasing daily and will continue to do so until the violations are corrected, Town Manager Mark Robinson said Wednesday.

Selectmen, who have a broad discretion on the fines, could opt to pursue them or not pursue them, he said.

Consent agreements approved pertain to these people: Lynne Cobb on Main Street across from the new fire station; Bert Ladd, who is buying property on the corner of Fayette Corner Road and Main Street; Levie Spigner of California for property at the corner of Fayette Corner Road and Main Street; and Joseph and Ellen Kennefich, who are going through probate for property on North Road.

Selectmen opted not to sign a consent agreement with Daniel Myrand on the corner of Moose Hill Road and Main Street (Route 17) until a state Department of Environmental Protection enforcement officer determines whether Myrand is compliance with the state’s hobbyist regulation.

Myrand says he is a hobbyist who likes to tinker on vehicles. He now has four vehicles on two abutting properties, which he pays two tax bills on and says he wants to keep the vehicles for sentimental reasons.

On Monday, selectmen also agreed to meet with school officials on Tuesday, Jan. 3, at the school to have an open discussion on budget issues, Robinson said.
