RANGELEY – A special town meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1, at the town office to ask residents to approve borrowing an additional $135,000 for renovations to a sewage pumping station.

Town Manager Perry Ellsworth told selectmen at last week’s board meeting that he had recently learned the current budget, approved at $550,000, would be too little to sustain the project, after bids came in recently.

“Just when you think you’re going at it at 60 mph, the transmission breaks,” Ellsworth quipped, saying he was surprised to learn the amount budgeted for the construction was too little, but that he hopes residents will vote to allow the town to borrow the additional funds.

The pumping station in question has been faulty for a long time, he said, and has caused sewage backups in homes and businesses in Rangeley.

Ellsworth said the bids had come in high because of rising fuel costs and because of the tight construction schedule set by the town.

The town manager said Rangeley officials have been looking for ways to “cut corners.”

“There’s no fluff left” to cut from the project, he said.
