LIVERMORE – Selectmen decided Monday night to buy recapped winter tires for town trucks and close the Community Building a month early, all in an effort to save money.
Highway Foreman Bert Bryant said winter tires were needed for the town’s vehicles. The board chose to buy six for between $130 and $147 each, as opposed to new ones for about $300 each.
Town Administrative Assistant Kurt Schaub announced that because of the high cost of heating fuel, the Community Building would close after the Nov. 8 elections. Normally it is closed Dec. 1 and reopens April 1.
Schaub also reported that work was almost done on the Goding Road, with half the base down and only stone to be placed on top. Warm temperatures expected this weekend will help the process, he said.
Local historian Dennis Stires proposed holding a Livermore Day, tentatively scheduled for Aug. 3, 2006, to celebrate the town’s heritage. He said he envisions a chicken barbecue at Lakeshore Motel and a boat parade and fireworks on Long Pond. Working with the Lakeshore Motel owners, he said he will form a committee to come up with some fund-raisers for this project. Proceeds from the barbecue would help pay costs, too, he said.
Stires asked Schaub to look into whether the town had money that could be used for the celebration.
Another project discussed was creating vital record summaries in printed form, as well as on CD-ROM, for townspeople’s private purchase. These statistics would be obtained from the Livermore Town Office, Norlands Library, Livermore-Livermore Falls Historical Society and Maine State Archives in Augusta.
Schaub indicated that only records in the public domain could be obtained.
Fire Chief Randy Berry, in observance of National Fire Prevention Week from Oct. 9-15, will be visiting local schools. He stressed the importance of residents putting their E-911 address numbers on their houses to aid firefighters and rescue personnel. These numbers should be readily visible and no more than 50 feet from the road.
Homes within 50 feet of the road can have numbers on them; those beyond 50 feet should use a signpost or other means to display the number, he said. Ideally, the numbers should be illuminated or made of reflective material. For further information, people may go to the Web site www.livermorefire.org.
Selectmen voted to donated $100 to the Maine Communities Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund. The town of Buxton has challenged Maine towns and cities to contribute to the fund, established at the Sanford Institution for Savings branch in Buxton.
Selectmen advised that the Town Office would be closed Thursday, Sept. 29, and Tuesday, Oct. 4, while Town Clerk Renda Libby attends training. The office will also be closed Oct. 10 in observance of Columbus Day.
