KINGFIELD – Selectmen will hold a special town meeting on Thursday to vote on a variety of financial issues, including whether or not to accept a controversial donation given to the town by Poland Spring Water Co. Part of that money has already been spent.
First Selectman John Dill initially accepted the $10,000 that Poland Spring offered the town as part of its “good neighbor” program, and began spending the money on a variety of replacement items for town property.
Some residents, however, have said they think it was inappropriate for Dill to accept the money at a time Poland Spring is considering opening a bottling plant in town.
Dill said that the special town meeting was scheduled to decide other town business, but that an article has been added to the warrant to allow the town to decide whether or not to accept the donation.
The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. Thursday in Webster Hall.
Other items on the warrant include the purchase of a new ladder truck from Carrabassett Valey, the disposal of the former SAD 58 superintendent’s office and the purchase of a new bucket loader.
