LIVERMORE FALLS – Volunteers and participants are needed. Trained or untrained, it doesn’t matter.

There are a number of volunteer opportunities available this year through the SAD 36/Jay Adult and Community Education Center. Those opportunities range from literacy and math tutors to help people enrolled in adult basic education or those working on their general education development credentials, to working with parents in a new opportunity of “CATCH the Web.”

CATCH, which stands for children, adults, teens, community and homes, is a program being offered through the center in partnership with Literacy Volunteers of America Inc. and Livermore Falls Head Start, literacy volunteer coordinator Cindy Langewisch said Monday.

The program is intended to provide literacy services for all ages.

The program may have teenagers and adults working with parents who want to improve literacy skills or start working on their General Educational Development credential or who want to improve literacy, Langewisch said.

“One of the big things we find is a lot of adults need one-on-one support,” Livermore Falls Head Start representative Judie Trask said Monday.

The program is also expected to help all involved to become better, active community members. One goal of the CATCH the Web program is to make people more aware of the programs that are offered at the adult learning center to serve the needs and goals of the individuals and families in the community.

Livermore Falls Head Start and Early Head Start programs serve children from age 3 to 5 and from birth to 3 years, with the Early Start program helping pregnant women as well.

Now, those enrolled in the CATCH the Web program, which is open to anyone in the community, are working on ABC community literacy books. The books include pictures of kids in various places in the community so that they know their community, Trask said.

They’re working pages featuring the letter “S” after a visit to Stevenson’s Strawberry Fields in Wayne, SAD 36/Jay Adult Learning Center coordinator Carrie Castonguay said Monday.

Anyone interested in volunteering or participating in the programs may contact the adult learning center at 897-6384 or e-mail Langewisch at [email protected] or Scott Sencabaugh at [email protected]..
