CARTHAGE – Deputies are looking for a motorcyclist who led police on a chase from Carthage to Dixfield with the motorcycle going in excess of 100 miles per hour, Sheriff’s Cpl. Nate Bean said Thursday.

Bean said he was responding to a complaint on Winter Hill Road when he saw a motorcycle coming down the road Wednesday, shortly after 9 p.m., its driver operating erratically on the dirt part of the road. Bean pulled out to stop it.

But the driver didn’t stop and sped off on the motorcycle with Bean in pursuit, Bean said.

He pursued the motorcyclist for five miles on Route 2. It turned onto Common Road in Dixfield, and Bean lost it on the curvy road, he said.

He stopped vehicles to see if anyone had seen the motorcycle, he said, and was told the biker had gotten back onto Route 2.

Bean said he went back to Winter Hill Road and talked to people there who said they saw the motorcyclist go back up the road.

Bean was assisted by Franklin County Deputies Aaron Turcotte and Michelle St. Clair; an officer visiting from Aroostook County, Sgt. Forrest Dudley; and two Dixfield officers. During their search they found the bike behind a residence on Winter Hill Road, Bean said.

Bean said his dog, Ben, tracked the driver for two miles before they lost his trail.

The motorcycle was towed and the incident remains under investigation.

Bean said the driver of the bike, believed to be a male, faces numerous charges including driving to endanger, eluding, reckless conduct, criminal speed, operating left of the centerline and failure to signal a turn.
