JAY – Selectmen have approved highway foreman John Johnson’s decision to post town roadways for weight restrictions during certain weather conditions.
The town’s ordinance requires Johnson to come before the board to inform it of the posting, as he did Monday. Johnson said that during a recent warm spell, he posted the roads.
He’ll put up the rest of the weight-restriction signs when he gets more posters, he said.
The restrictions prohibit vehicles registered for more than 23,000 pounds of gross vehicle weight from traveling over posted roads if the temperature is above 32 degrees and there is water showing in the cracks of the road.
There are some exemptions listed in the town ordinance, including vehicles delivering certain goods such as heating fuel oil, and vehicles registered for a gross weight of more than 23,000 pounds and traveling without a load other than tools or equipment necessary for the proper operation of the vehicle.
The complete ordinance may be found on the Internet at www.jay-maine.org/ord_vehicle_weight.htm.
In other business, selectmen appointed Mike Pineau to the Planning Board.
