RUMFORD — The Rumford Historical Society board of directors has prepared its fall schedule of programs. All current and prospective members are encouraged to attend. The public is welcome to attend the events.
Programs planned are as follows:
Wednesday, Sept. 16, Elliot (Bud) Burns will present “A History of Agriculture in Our Valley.” Burns has written the update from 1972 to 2000 to Jack Leane’s book “A History of Rumford, Maine.” He also authored a weekly series of articles on the Rumford Mill and “The Oxford Story,” a history of the Oxford Paper Company.
Wednesday, Oct. 21, Curtis Rice, Rumford Historical Society president, will present a slide summary and discussion on Rumford’s history on the Internet, including slides from local history teacher Peter McKenna.
Wednesday, Nov. 18, William (Bill) Weston, Rumford Historical Society vice president and long time member, will present a program on the “Evolution of Water Power at the Dam in Rumford.” Weston has interest in the history of the industrial mills of the region and the power of the waters of the Androscoggin on those mills.
In December, the society will make plans for the holiday season.
All meetings are held at 7 p.m. on the third Wednesday of each month, in the auditorium of the Municipal Building, 145 Congress St. Dues for the society are $10 each individual each year.
The society also welcomes people to visit the archives, on the third floor of the Municipal Building, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursdays, to review old documents and photos from the past.
