RUMFORD — A pair of goals by Katie Summer and T. J. Cowin in the first half proved to be enough for Telstar as the Rebels remained unbeaten with a 3-0 triumph over Mountain Valley at Hosmer Field on Monday.

It was the first meeting between the teams since the Falcons won their first Mountain Valley Conference championship over Telstar 3-2 last October.

Telstar (4-0) didn’t leave anything up for grabs this time, though, and took control right away.

“This is a veteran team,” Telstar coach Gail Wight said, referring to eight seniors and 10 juniors on the Rebels’ roster. “They certainly know how to play. They are starting to jell, but there are some areas that they need to work on. Like today, the communication on the field wasn’t that good and (players) feed off each other.”

The Rebels drew first blood when Katie Summer stopped the ball by the right post, dribbled forward and beat Mountain Valley goalie Emily Gallant (12 saves) on the short side. Victoria Forkus assisted on the play.

Mountain Valley (2-3) was unable to generate consistent offensive pressure, so the defense had to backpedal. Ayla Allen McKenzie Kaubrys and Sidney Yahn were busy on the defensive end.

“We still need to work on positioning,” Mountain Valley coach Melissa Forbes said. “On offense, they were cutting behind players, but they need to be in front in order to get the ball. This team is progressing, we showed our inexperience today, but the potential is there.”

Telstar, which has outscored opponents 23-0 this season, applied pressure with its midfielders. The forward line of Cowin, Amanda Wiley and Summer combined for 19 shots.

“I was impressed by Telstar,” Forbes said. “They moved the ball and beat us (to the ball) with their speed.”

Cowin broke into the circle, pushed past a defender and scored her ninth goal of the season. Gallant charged out to cut down the angle, but Cowin snuck the ball by Gallants left leg pad.

Forbes adjusted by repositioning players, moving Shawnee Akers on the forward line and Allen up to center-mid, and inserting freshman Payton Provencher to forward.

Allen has the best opportunity from the top of the circle in the second half, but her blast was stopped by Telstar goalie Sam Tibbetts. Halfbacks Sam Largess and Emma Davis and fullback Mariah Bundy kept the Falcons at bay.

Forkus scored on a one-timer in the second half.

“I know we can pass better,” Wight said. “We committed a lot of fouls and we are not capitalizing on corners, but the bottom line is we won.”
