EUSTIS — A fire in a woodchip bin at Stratton Lumber Co. Tuesday morning damaged the metal roof on a building, Eustis Fire Chief Rusty Fearon said.

About 20 firefighters from Eustis, Carrabassett Valley and Rangeley responded to the fire at the company on Fontaine Road, which is off Route 27.

Woodchips are blown in from the saw mill and planer mill through pipes into a big bin in the building, Fearon said. Dust accumulates on the beams and a spark from the saw mill or planer mill caught the dust on fire, he said.

Firefighters used aerial ladders from both mutual aid towns to help contain the fire.

There was heavy smoke coming from the building when firefighters arrived, he said. Panels were removed from a wall to alleviate the smoke, Fearon said.

Firefighters responded to the fire at about 9 a.m. and left between 1:30 and 2 p.m.
