OXFORD — Good weather and a great lineup of events and activities combined to draw big crowds to the Oxford Fair last week, according to Lance Bean, treasurer of the Oxford County Agricultural Society.
“I can say at the moment that the numbers look very good,” Bean said Monday afternoon. Fair officials are still adding up the numbers of fair attendees between Sept. 13 through 19, and expect to have firm attendance records available by the end of the week.
“The weather was great all week and it is showing in our attendance numbers,” Bean said. “There were a lot of new events and exhibits this year and during the week, but the biggest day was Saturday, with the Josh Turner concert, the Great Frontier bull riding, truck pulling, harness racing and other livestock exhibits all being full.”
Oxford police said there were no major incidents during the week.
“We had a pretty good week at the fairgrounds,” Patrolman Jim Richardson said. “The weekend was extremely busy.”
Richardson said police were able to recover a stolen mini chopper that was taken from the fairgrounds from one of the vendors with the assistance of Norway police. The equipment, which had some damage, was found in the woods near the fairgrounds.
Police are still investigating the incident and no arrests have been made, Richardson said.
Darlene Campbell of Waterford displayed her Angora bunnies at the Oxford Fair last week. Campbell uses the fiber to spin yarns, sometimes incorporating Alpaca fiber, and weave garments.
