CARTHAGE — New England Celtic Arts will host acclaimed Celtic harp master and vocalist Nadia Birkenstock at Skye Theatre Performing Arts Center on Sunday, Sept. 27.
Born in Germany, Birkenstock started playing piano at age 5 and grew up listening to classical music. Her first contact with the Celtic harp was when she saw the legendary Scottish harp duo Sileas. Thanks to a scholarship, she received her first vocal training at Westover School in Connecticut and later studied voice at the Music Conservatory of Duesseldorf in Germany.
She taught herself to play the Celtic harp at 16 and attended master classes. During her vocal studies, she created her first solo performance program for Celtic harp and voice. This was well received and Birkenstock has since appeared in concerts at festivals, folk clubs, concert halls, churches, castles and other venues in central Europe.
Her repertoire features both original songs and compositions, as well as traditional Celtic folk songs and harp tunes. In 2001, her first solo album, “Emerald Isles,” was released, followed by “Wandering between the Worlds,” 2003; “Winter Tales,” 2006; “Les Berceuses de Coline,” 2007; and finally, her songwriting debut, “Strange New Land,” 2008.
The concert starts at 7 p.m., with a preshow jam at 6:15 p.m.; bring your musical instruments and join in. Skye is at 2 Highland Drive off Winter Hill Road and U.S. Route 2. Tickets are $10 at the door; call 562-4445.
