WEST PARIS — Two major building projects are expected to be completed soon: the grandstand at the Edwin J. Mann Athletic Complex and an addition to the Arthur L. Mann Memorial Library.
The grandstand will be dedicated at noon on Sunday, Oct. 18. It replaces the one at Harold C. Perham Field that was destroyed by fire in July 2008.
The original structure, built in 1945 by the Work Projects Administration to give people jobs, has served the senior and youth league baseball teams.
Jeff Shock, president of the West Paris Athletic Association, said the grandstand will be completed in the next two weeks.
“We will have a band, dedication ceremony, including hot dogs and beverages, and a ball game to celebrate the day of renewal for our baseball complex,” he said. The grandstand as a whole will once again be dedicated to Harold C. Perham who donated the lumber for the original grandstand and was custodian of the fields for many years.
The dugout will be dedicated to Ray Brown, who for many years was a strong supporter of youth league baseball in the Oxford Hills area. The handicap access and seating area will be dedicated to Avis M. Hayes, who was also a strong supporter of youth league sports and a softball player for West Paris High School.
Both Brown and Hayes passed away this summer, and it was decided they should be remembered in this way.
The 1,800-square-foot addition to the library on Main Street has the frost walls and concrete slab in place. The building construction will begin soon.
“Things are going very well and we expect the addition to be done sometime in December,” said Rodney Abbott, chairman of the library trustees. “The concrete work was done by Rapid Ralph Concrete of Hebron, and we have stuck with local contractors for the rest of the work. Framing and construction of the building will be done by Dan Daniels, plumbing by Dan Cornell, heating and air conditioning by Barry Collette, and electrical by Richard Bradeen, all contractors from West Paris.”
There will be a grand opening after it is finished.
