RUMFORD — Chrissy Briggs drove home the game-winning goal with under a
minute remaining in the game as Mountain Valley tipped Jay-Livermore
Falls, 2-1, in MVC girls’ soccer action Thursday.
Ellen Thorne put the Falcons (4-0-3) on the board first, less than
two minutes into the contest. But, Lexi Deering evened things up for
the Tigers (4-2-1) on an assist from Alexis Blodgett before the
midpoint.
The Falcons applied extra offensive pressure in the last five
minutes of regulation, forcing a bobbled ball by the Wildcats’ goalie.
And, Briggs was there to finish off the scoring effort with the
game-winning goal.
Poland 2, Freeport 0
FREEPORT — Kelsie Taylor netted a pair of second-half goals as Poland
rolled to a 2-0 victory over Freeport in WMC girl’s soccer action
Thursday.
Celeste Knowles provided the key pass on both goals for the Knights
(2-3-1), allowing Taylor to capitalize on her position. Samantha St.
Pierre made 10 saves to preserve the shutout.
Mt. Blue 2, Lawrence 1
FAIRFIELD — An own goal by Lawrence with 3:40 left lifted Mt. Blue to a
2-1 win in an exciting end-to-end KVAC soccer contest Thursday.
Marlie Mochamer was credited with the goal for the Cougars (3-3-1),
who trailed 1-0 at the half. Mochamer assisted on Marina West’s tying
goal in the second half. Kristen Melcher scored the only goal for
Lawrence (3-4). Emily Dean e made nine saves for the Cougars. Jess
Poulin stopped seven shots for the Bulldogs.
York 6, Gray-NG 0
GRAY — Emma Clark and Ashley Taylor scored two goals apiece to lead York to a 6-0 victory over Gray-New Gloucester.
Clark scored the game’s first two goals to help stake the Wildcats
(5-1) to a 3-0 advantage by halftime. Kayla Swasey and Whitney Leroux
also scored for York.
Goalie Taylor Damon made 19 saves for Gray-NG (0-6-1), while Carley Lee made three for York.
Field hockey
Mt. Ararat 2, Oxford Hills 0
SOUTH PARIS — Audrey Petteruti scored the eventual game-winning goal
with 7:24 remaining in regulation as Mt. Ararat grabbed a 2-0 victory
over Oxford Hills in KVAC field hockey action Thursday.
Hayley LaPointe netted the game-clincher with just 19 seconds remaining in the game for the Eagles.
Goalie Mariah Kimball made five saves for the Vikings (5-3), while
Haley Poston prevented five for Mt. Ararat in the winning effort.
Leavitt 1, Waterville 0
WATERVILLE — McKayla McCann scored the game-winning goal at the
11:56 mark of the second half as Leavitt took a 1-0 victory over
Waterville in KVAC field hockey action Thursday.
Emily Murphy assisted on McCann’s goal for the Hornets (5-3).
Grace Gould made seven saves for the Panthers (4-4), while Taylor Eells earned the win in net for Leavitt with eight saves.
Edward Little 4, Brunswick 2
AUBURN — After jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first half, Edward Little managed to hang on for a 4-2 victory over Brunswick in KVAC field hockey action Thursday.
Jordan Tate, Katie Williamson and Jess Campbell all tallied first-half goals for the Red Eddies (3-6), while Marie Dufrene-Dixon added an insurance goal in the second frame. Kayla Cummings made 10 saves for EL to notch the win. Sam Dean, Maddie Williamson, Kayla Nadeau and Miranda Matin also contributed with assists.
Erica Paullette and Hayley Shaw were credited with goals for the Dragon (3-5), while Kyia Jensen provided an assist. Abigail Theberge turned back 11 shots between the posts for Brunswick.
Skowhegan 8, Mt. Blue 0
FARMINGTON — Becky Pratt registered a hat trick to lead Skowhegan to a 8-0 rout over Mt. Blue in a KVAC field hockey tilt Thursday.
Nicole Sevey, Mallory Hancock, McKayla Fitzmaurice, Liz Noddin and McKayla Michonste also tallied for the Indians (8-0) to complete the scoring. Megan Hancock needed only two saves to preserve the shutout.
Amanda Hall and Kelsey Kidd combined for 10 saves in net for Mt. Blue (2-5).
Boys’ soccer
Telstar 1, Livermore Falls 1
LIVERMORE FALLS — Despite outshooting Telstar, 26-5, and holding the
advantage in corner kicks, 8-1, Livermore Falls just could not shake
the Rebels, settling for a 1-1 tie in a boys’ Mountain Valley
Conference boys’ soccer game Thursday.
The Rebels (3-3-1) struck first with an unassisted goal by Tyler
Brown in the first half. Then Willie Brown tied it up in the second
half with his goal for the Andies (3-3-1).
Telstar goalie Danie Vaughn held off the Andies’ onslaught of shots,
making 19 saves, while Livermore Falls goalies Willie Brown and Jake
Freeman combined to make four saves.
