LEWISTON — A mix of 16 different Lewiston field hockey players fired everything but the kitchen sink at Morse goalie Alejandra Rodriguez on Thursday, though if they’d thrown that, she probably would have stopped it, too.

Rodriguez turned aside 14 shots in the final 30 minutes and made three first-half goals stand up as the Shipbuilders earned their second consecutive victory, 3-0, over the Blue Devils.

“When they were this close to me, trying to drive the ball as hard as they could, I was like, ‘You are not getting those by me,'” Rodriguez said. “I want to keep going this season. I don’t want anything to get by me.”

Morse (2-6) began the season with six consecutive losses before turning things around Tuesday with a 1-0 double-overtime win at home against Oxford Hills. Thursday’s victory at Lewiston avenged a 2-1 loss to the Blue Devils in Bath last week.

“This is a good time for this to happen, for all of us, for the team,” Rodriguez said.

“It’s about time,” added forward Lauren Hixon, who scored two of the three Morse goals in the opening half.

Shannon Rice got things started quickly for Morse, popping a goal past Lewiston keeper Emily Craig just 2:47 into the contest.

“Right off the bat, that’s what we wanted to do was set the tone and play our game,” Morse coach Amanda Shorey said.

Lewiston applied plenty of pressure over the next 15 minutes, but all the Devils (2-6) had to show for it was another Morse goal. This time, Hixon found a loose ball at the right side of the cage and swatted it through two defenders and Craig. Six minutes later, Hixon split a pair of defenders and broke in alone on Craig, sliding the ball past her and in for the third Morse goal.

“In the first half, I didn’t feel like the girls were focused or prepared,” Lewiston coach Amie Sherry said. “They weren’t ready for Morse. In the second half, we talked about getting to the free balls and making them ours, going to them and communicating more.”

That change worked. Lewiston outshot Morse 17-2 in the second half, and drew eight penalty corners to none, but couldn’t solve Rodriguez.

“What a change, she’s changed just from the last game we played them,” Sherry said. “She was definitely a lot more aggressive.”
