Richard A. Martel

LEWISTON – Richard A. Martel, 77, of 321 River Road and Sun City Center, Fla., loving husband, devoted father and idolized pepere, passed away peacefully Friday evening, Sept. 25, 2009, after a brief illness.

Born in Lewiston, son of Levite and Blanche Cote Martel, he graduated from St. Dom’s H.S. in 1949, and attended the University of Maine. He married his high school sweetheart, Celine I. Loiselle, on Sept. 27, 1952.

He was a meat cutter until sickness sent him back to school to become a certified public accountant. He was a partner in the firm Martel, Provencher & Carrier, CPA and a professional member of the AICPA and Maine Society of CPAs. He enjoyed being a volunteer for SeniorsPlus and AARP and was a long-standing, active member of Holy Cross Church as a lector, choir member, Parish Council, as well as a strong supporter of Holy Cross School and St. Dom’s. He was a former member of the Lewiston-Auburn Rotary Club and was a Paul Harris Fellow.

He is survived by his beloved wife; two sons, Richard R. and wife, Fei, of Florida, and Raymond and wife, Rhonda, of Lewiston; four daughters, Claire Marshall and husband, Glenn, of Delaware, Susan Sullivan of Massachusetts, Louise Stapleton and husband, Michael, of Massachusetts, and Pauline Carr and husband, Ronald, of Lisbon; 11 grandchildren, Christopher Martel, Melissa Love, Richard L. Martel, Jonathan and Nicole Marshall, Alex and Morgan Corbett, Adli Sullivan, Kayla and Bradley Carr, and Thomas Stapleton; and two great-granddaughters.

He is also survived by two sisters, Jeanine and husband, Don Beliveau, and Anita and husband, Robert Ouellette; and two brothers, Robert and wife, Kelly Martel, and Roger Martel.

He was predeceased by his parents; and godparents, Alexandre and Ida Beaudoin.

The family wishes to extend heartfelt gratitude for all the prayers and encouraging words received and a special thank you to the staff at Androscoggin Home Care and Dr. Kenneth Brodsky.
