100 years ago, 1909

Farmers along the electric line from Lewiston to Waterville will be interested to know that the promised freight service on this road is soon to be established. Four new cars, built especially for this service, are now completed except for the running gears which were ordered many weeks ago, but shipment of the same was delayed until this week. A big freight business is assured from the start.

50 years ago, 1959

Emil H. Schott of 607 Main St., Lewiston, left yesterday on a 15-day tour of Europe. He and other Zundapp-Ducati motorcycle dealers from the United States will visit motorcycle plants at Munich, Germany, and Bologna, Italy.

25 years ago, 1984

Lewiston’s Bates College will be host to two guest speakers Monday, one lecturing on the nuclear freeze issue and the other discussing women’s roles in literature.

Actress Margot Kidder will speak at 2 p.m. in Skelton Lounge of Chase Hall. Ms. Kidder will discuss the nuclear freeze proposal and state Rep. Elizabeth Mitchell’s campaign for the U.S. Senate.

Professor Jeannine Blackwell of Michigan State University will give two lectures:  “An Island of Her Own” at 4:30 p.m. and “Fractured Fairy Tales: German Women Authors and the Grimm Tradition” at 7:30 p.m.

The public is invited to hear each speaker at no charge.
