Leon Almon Winter Jr.
1925 – 2009
AUGUSTA – Leon Almon Winter Jr., 84, of Weld, passed peacefully on Friday afternoon, Sept. 25, at the Maine Veteran’s Home in Augusta,, with family at his side.
He was born March 1, 1925, in Weld, the son of Leon Almon and Dorothy Sophia (Swett) Winter Sr. Two weeks prior to graduation, he was drafted into the military service and served in the 30th infantry division and participated in five European campaigns.
On April 21, 1946, he married Pauline L. ‘Polly” Libby at Rumford. They enjoyed over 60 years of marriage in the beauty of their hometown of Weld, and spent many of those years managing their business, the Winter’s Housekeeping Cabins. Polly predeceased him on Jan. 10, 2007.
For 34 years, he was the Weld R. F. D. mail carrier, since 1947, he was a member of the Rural Letter Carrier Association.
Committed to his country and his community, he was a member of the Weld American Legion Post and the mystic Tie Masonic Lodge for over 60 years and served as the post’s first commander in 1945, and was a past master of the lodge.
He was an avid sportsman and a registered Maine Guide. He taught many area youth, including his beloved daughter, Fawn, how to enjoy and utilize the Maine woods. Many cherished memories include searching for the perfect Christmas tree, recognizing the calls and locations of birds, and making wooden whistles from willows. He always had a CB and loved keeping in touch with others or being available to lend a helping hand to those in need.
He is survived by his daughter, Fawn Herman and her husband, Robert, of Cumberland; two grandchildren, Rob Herman of Windham and Anne Seeber and her husband, David, of Randolph; a great-granddaughter, Jaidyn Seeber; his sister, Romaine Hutchinson and her husband, Edmund, of Weld; many nieces, nephews and lifelong friends.
He was predeceased by his folks; his wife; and a sister, June Vining.
