Phyllis W. Young
1917 – 2009
WEST PARIS — Phyllis Welch Young died peacefully in her sleep on Sept. 25 at Market Square Health Center.
She was born in West Paris on Nov. 21, 1917, the daughter of Hartson W. Welch and Pearl Rogers Welch. She attended local schools, graduating from West Paris High School. Upon graduation she moved to New York City to train as a registered nurse and graduated from the Mt. Sinai Hospital School of Nursing. She was a member of the Florence Nightingale Society and during World War II, she was the industrial nurse for the I. Miller Shoe Co. in Long Island City, N.Y.
In 1941, she married Raymond J. Young and lived in New York City until Mr. Young’s retirement from Chase Manhattan Bank in 1973, whereupon they moved back to the family home in West Paris.
For many years she maintained beautiful summer gardens at her West Paris home and spent many hours refinishing antique furniture. She enjoyed reading historical novels, doing crossword puzzles and was incredibly proud of her two grandsons.
She is survived by her son, R. John Young Jr. and his wife, Chrys-Ann, of Stamford, Conn.; and two grandsons, Brian Hartson Young of Las Vegas, Nev., and Timothy John Young of Tucson, Ariz., who will miss her dearly.
Phyllis was predeceased by her husband who passed away in August 1981;
a sister, Shirley Welch Rose of Canton; and her brother, Hartson W.
Welch Jr. of Golden, Co.
The family would like to especially thank the staff at Market Square Health Care Center for their exceptional care and companionship during her stay there.
