SCARBOROUGH – Patricia Capano, 80, of Cape Elizabeth, died May 4, at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House.

She was born in Portland, on Jan. 14, 1929, the oldest of four daughters of Lorne and Priscilla LaRochelle. She graduated from South Portland High School, Westbrook Junior College and Farmington State Teachers College.

She taught school in Skowhegan and Portland, before marrying her college sweetheart, Edmund Capano, on Sept. 27, 1952. After her marriage, she continued to teach in the elementary school system in Cape Elizabeth for 25 years. She was a delegate to the N.E.A. Conference in Portland, Ore., and again in Atlantic City, N.J.

She enjoyed antiquing and gardening and was a former member of the Tall Oaks Garden Club. She was an avid fan of her three children’s athletic events, as well as the Boston Red Sox. She enjoyed the family’s vacation log cabin in the woods of New Hampshire and following the death of her husband, spent the winters in Daytona Beach, Fla.

For many years, she volunteered for the Bruce Roberts Children’s Fund. She also served as a trustee for the historic Spurwink Congregational Church in Cape Elizabeth, where she would open the church for weddings, funerals and special events.

She is survived by her three children, Deborah and her husband, Kevin Murphy, of Sebago and sons, Mark and his wife, Colleen Capano, of New Gloucester and Peter and his wife, Susan Capano, of Manchester, N.H.; her grandchildren, Molly Murphy, Benjamin Capano and Neil and Lucia Capano; her sisters, Nancy (Walter) Wynne of South Portland and Suzanne Palmer of Westport, Mass.; and nine nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband of 40 years, Edmund; and a sister, Constance Rendell.

The family would like to express a special thank-you to Dr. McInerney and nurse, Donna, and the entire staff at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House for the care that they gave to Patricia.
