LEWISTON – Melvyn G. Kitchen, 75, of Fifth Street, Auburn, died unexpectedly on March 20, at Central Maine Medical Center, after a brief illness.

He was born Jan. 4, 1933, in Bangor, the son of the late Kenneth and Helen Kitchen of Hermon. He graduated from Hermon High School and served in the U.S. Army, serving in Salsber, Austria.

He was employed for many years as a custodian at Lewiston High School, retiring in 1997. Mel was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox and the New York Giants.

He enjoyed camping, fishing, golf and many outdoor activities. He was known by the entire family for his outstanding humor and loved to play practical jokes on all. He was our favorite Uncle Mel! He never met a person that he didn’t like or wouldn’t talk to.

He leaves the love of his life, Joan Morgan, whom he married on Jan. 19, 1963; two sisters, Marilyn and her husband, John Anderson, of Hermon and Lois and her husband, Bill Phillips, of Greenbush, Mich.; brothers-in-law, Stu Devine, Thirnwood Morgan, Fred Morgan, Dana Morgan and Gerald Morgan; sisters-in-law, Betty Morgan and Peggy Morgan; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a sister, Milly Devine; a sister-in-law, Vivian Davis; and a brother-in-law, James Morgan.

He will be sadly missed by his favorite cat, Angel.
