AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) – A newspaper photographer taking feature shots in Maine is credited with helping to rescue a swimmer who was swept over a dam and fell 15 feet onto rocks below.
Assistant Fire Chief Brian Roche says the area where two men were swimming Monday afternoon near a dam in the town of Wayne is typically safe. But he says recent rain created a strong current.
Kennebec Journal photographer Andy Molloy says he tried to warn the men, but 25-year-old Shawn Lawson was swept over the dam.
Roche says Molloy dragged Lawson to shore and kept his head above water. He was assisted by two men who were working nearby. Lawson escaped with minor injuries. He was treated and release from Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.
