FARMINGTON – June Arlene Vining, 82, of Weld, died unexpectedly, Sunday, Dec. 8, at the Franklin Memorial Hospital.
She was born on April 9, 1926, in Weld, the daughter of Leon Almon and Dorothy Sylvia (Swett) Winter Sr. She attended Weld schools, graduating from Weld High School, where she played on the women’s basketball team.
She worked at the Kawanhee Inn as a young woman from 1941 to 1944, at Hilton’s Woodworkers of Weld in 1942, and at the Weld Post Office in 1943. She lived in Augusta for a short time working at Kay’s Candy Store and at New England Public Service Typing. She later moved back to Weld with Pauline Libby who had been living and working in Augusta with her.
On Dec. 7, 1946, she married Hiram B. Vining. She went back to work at the woodworkers of Weld from 1945 to 1948. In 1957, she drove a “school bus” (station wagon) for high school children living in Weld attending school in Dixfield until 1961. During those years, she also worked in “Buddy’s” mill until 1970.
She was a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, Homemaker’s Extension, Weld Congregational Church, where she also served as an aide, and the Eastern Star.
She is survived by her children, Martha Winter-Vining and her companion, Claude, of Readfield, Stephen Vining of Weld and Kenneth Hiram Vining of Farmington; a brother, Leon Almon Winter Jr. of Weld; a sister, Romaine Hutchinson and her husband, Edmund, of Weld; grandchildren, Kristina and her husband, Mark, Shayne and his wife, Jennifer, Joshua, Luke and Michel; great-grandchildren, Molly, Devin, Brody and Mya.
She was predeceased by her husband, Hiram on May 4; her parents, Leon and Dorothy; a sister-in-law, Pauline Winter.
