AUBURN – Benson G. Grant, 88, of Auburn, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 9, at the Hospice House of Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice.

He was born in Lewiston, Dec. 8, 1920, the son of the late Raymon W. and Carrie Girou Grant. He was educated in Lewiston schools, graduating from Lewiston High School in 1938 and attended Bliss Business College.

He served his country in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, and was married to Arlene Macomber April 28, 1943. She passed away Sept. 15, 1971. Ben was always employed in the family business, starting with Grant’s Candy Store on Lisbon Street in Lewiston and later with Grant & Grant Caterers, the forerunner of the present Grant’s Bakery on Sabattus Street in Lewiston, and was also co-owner of G. & H. Caterers. In his retirement, he enjoyed working at Taber’s Driving Range and Grant’s Bakery.

He was a 50-plus year member of Ashlar Lodge 105, AF & AM, Scottish Rite Valley of the Androscoggin, Consistory, Valley of Portland, the Kora Shrine Temple, the Kora Arab Patrol, of which he served as president for two terms, and past master of Stevens Mills Grange.

He enjoyed NASCAR racing and playing cards with his friends on a weekly basis.

He is survived by two sons, James Grant and wife, Jeannette, of Clearwater, Fla., and Richard Grant and wife, Kathy, of Lewiston; three grandchildren, Jason Grant, Jenniffer Perron and husband, John, and Rebecca Angelides and husband, Nicholas; five great-grandchildren, Colby, Morgan, Garrett and Wyatt Perron and Dru Angelides; a sister, Margaret Merrill of Auburn; a brother, Irving Grant and wife, Charlotte, of Lewiston, a brother-in-law, Alden Macomber and wife, Peggy; and several nieces and nephews.

He was also predeceased by a brother, Raymon Grant Jr.
